London Weekend Television (the original name of LWT) was a British television company. It was the second commercial television channel to launch in the United Kingdom, in 1955, and the first to be franchised to other countries, in 1961. London Weekend Television was bought by Granada, who were eventually to become the biggest shareholder.

LWT was a pioneer in two television technologies. It was the first commercial television station to broadcast colour; it was also the first station in the UK to broadcast regular news bulletins (since the News At Ten). The name London Weekend Television derives from the fact that the company was formed on a weekend by London Weekend Playhouse. Although originally based at the Shepherd's Bush studios, in Central London, it was re-located to purpose-built studios at Lime Grove, Shepherd's Bush, in 1966. LWT's output included documentaries, current affairs, comedy, quiz shows, entertainment programmes, family programmes and children's television. LWT's sister channel, ITV1, went on air on 3 November 1964.

LWT was acquired by Granada TV in 1986. Granada later sold LWT to a consortium of seven shareholders, of whom the largest was Carlton Communications, and the smallest was Capital Radio. The consortium was looking for a buyer for the company, and when Carlton did not want to buy, they instead decided to merge with LWT's two closest rivals, Yorkshire Television and Southern Television, in 1991. This left Carlton as a minority shareholder, alongside the existing owners, the BBC and Capital Radio. When Carlton Television was wound up in 1994, LWT became a joint venture between the BBC and Capital Radio, and had to divest itself of its interest in Granada and Carlton.

In December 1994, the then ITV franchise holder, Thames Television, acquired LWT and Thames won the franchise a year later. After Thames' involvement in the channel ended in 1996, responsibility for the channel's programming passed to Carlton and Southern Television.

In 2000, the channel was rebranded as ITV1 London. In May 2003, Carlton took full control of the channel, and in 2006, it was rebranded as ITV1 London and Wales. On 1 April 2009, the channel was rebranded again as ITV1.
